Born in Portugal, Miguel's deep connection with Belgium began on August 27, 1985, during an initial seven-week visit that proved profoundly transformative. Instantly captivated by the country’s distinctive energy, culture, and social environment, he developed a bond that transcended mere tourism, forming lasting and meaningful friendships.

Upon returning to Portugal, Belgium remained a constant focus for Miguel, inspiring frequent visits. These journeys allowed him to explore major Belgian cities—Antwerp, Liège, Ghent, Bruges, and Brussels—while gradually integrating the country’s rich culture and identity into his own.

In 1993, Miguel took the significant step of relocating to Belgium permanently. The country became the center of his personal life, where he raised three children and ultimately became a Belgian citizen in 1997.

A pivotal moment in his journey was his move to Louvain in 1994, which required him to master Dutch. Initially challenging due to its perceived difference from both Portuguese and French, his dedication and determination led to fluency within two years, supported by the encouragement and warmth of the local community.

Today, Belgium is Miguel's home. While he still maintains occasional ties with Portugal, his primary allegiance and commitment lie with the country he intentionally chose as the foundation for his life.
